Emirates Down Syndrome Association (EDSA) organized the 16th UAE Bocce Championship for people with Down Syndrome 2025 at the Dubai Center for People of Determination, with the participation of 18 centers and clubs from across the country, in collaboration with the Special Olympics UAE.
Dr. Manal Jaroor, EDSA chairperson, highlighted that this 16th edition of the championship builds on the event’s successful start in 2008. Bocce remains the sport of choice for people with Down Syndrome, consistently delivering positive results each year and seeing increased participation from centers and clubs across the UAE. This championship offers a unique opportunity to promote healthy competition and promote the sharing of experiences among athletes and coaches.
Dr. Jaroor praised the UAE’s wise leadership, stating, “Our children with disabilities receive exceptional care from the leadership, which has enacted laws, regulations, and launched initiatives that support their inclusion into public life, culture, and sports, alongside their peers and on an equal footing.”
She expressed heartfelt gratitude and deep appreciation, on behalf the members, people with Down Syndrome, and their families, to the Special Olympics UAE, for being a platform that nurtures champions and provides them with opportunities to participate in both local and international competitions. She emphasized their crucial role in promoting sports activities and highlighting the achievements of individuals with disabilities, both locally and globally.
Dr. Jaroor extended her thanks and appreciation to the association’s distinguished partners: the Ministry of Community Development, the Dubai Sports Council, the Union Coop (Diamond Sponsor of the Association’s Activities), ADNIC, Dubai National Insurance, and Prime Hospital.
In a statement, Mrs. Nawal Al Nasser, EDSA Vice-Chairperson, emphasized the importance of sports in promoting the health and well-being of people with Down syndrome. She noted that sports empower participants to engage in athletic events, offering both physical and psychological benefits, while also improving social communication and teamwork. Additionally, sports provide a supportive environment for individuals to express their talents and abilities, showcasing their skills and employing precise game strategies that require high focus, motor skills, and muscle strength
Mrs. Al Nasser added, “”For the 16th year in a row, this championship has proven its significance and popularity, with increasing participation and thrilling competition at both team and individual levels. Each year, athletes deliver exceptional performances, and the energy of the audience fills the event with joy and enthusiasm.”
The championship featured 105 athletes from three age groups—12-15 years, 15-21 years, and 22 years and above—representing centers and clubs across the UAE. The event was managed by Coach Mahmoud Atwan, supported by a skilled team of referees and specialists in this field.
