The champions of the Emirates Down Syndrome Association shined at the Al Ain Bocce Championship, achieving outstanding results and winning the “Al Ain Bocce Championship Cup” amid the participation of 15 centers and clubs from across the UAE.
Dr. Manal Jaroor, EDSA Chairperson, expressed her happiness with the team’s remarkable achievements. She emphasized that these results were not coincidental but rather the outcome of continuous effort and consistent training. She extended her gratitude to the team captain, Mahmoud Atwan, and all those involved in organizing the championship.
Jaroor added that the association carefully selects sports activities that suit the physical abilities of people with Down syndrome. This approach ensures they can fully benefit from sports, which play a significant role in preventing chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. It also improves sleep quality, flexibility, and balance, enhances mental and emotional well-being, stimulates cognitive development, and ultimately improves quality of life while boosting self-confidence and pride in accomplishments.
Ms. Nawal Al Nasser, EDSA Vice-chairperson also expressed her joy over the team’s significant victory and praised the pioneering role of the association’s partners, including the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Charity Foundation and Union Coop, for their commitment to supporting the association. She highlighted that this support reflects the noble values instilled in Emirati society and the commitment to the principle of social solidarity.
For his part, Coach Mahmoud Atwan, who has been coaching the team since 2008, affirmed that bocce is one of the most beloved sports among people with Down syndrome. He highlighted its significant role in improving physical fitness, building muscles, and increasing physical strength. Bocce also helps in developing both gross and fine motor skills, visual-motor coordination, and balance. Moreover, it promotes social interaction, relationship building, cooperation, and teamwork skills.
The Emirates Down Syndrome Association team proudly won 6 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal in this championship.
