Emirates Down Syndrome Association (EDSA) participated in the sixth edition of the Accessibilities Expo 2024, inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, CEO of Emirates Airlines and Group. The event was held at the Dubai World Trade Centre with wide participation from government entities, public and private institutions.
This participation was marked by the launch of the Emirates Down Syndrome Hospitality Academy’s first production line for hospitality and its creative kitchen, established by the association as part of one of its most important sustainable projects. This initiative aligns with the association’s strategic goals to empower and include people with Down syndrome.
Dr. Manal Jaroor, EDSA chairperson, emphasized the academy’s focus on honing the skills of people of determination and empowering them through tailored projects that match their professional tendencies. The academy provides professional training that opens up avenues for their full inclusion into society, securing real jobs in the hospitality sector, and developing their social skills to enable them to live equally with their peers.
Jaroor added that the academy is equipped with state-of-the-art tools and equipment that adhere to the highest international standards in safety and food hygiene, and it has successfully obtained the necessary licenses from relevant authorities.
“We are committed to moving forward with steady steps, guided by the expertise of specialized volunteer consultants and skilled professionals in the field,” she stated.
Additionally, Dr. Jaroor highlighted the significance of this participation, which included the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment to initiate fruitful and constructive cooperation, achieve mutual benefits, and enhance the noble goal of serving the community and raising awareness of the importance of social responsibility to support all sectors, including people of determination
For her part, Ms. Nawal Al Nasser, Vice Chairperson, expressed pride in this distinguished partnership, confident in its potential for exceptional outcomes. She emphasized the importance of such community partnerships to collaborate in supporting and empowering people of determination and improving their quality of life.
Al Nasser added, “Every day, we owe thanks to all our distinguished partners—partners in success and achievement—who, through their support, have brought us to this stage. We can only remember and commend them, including The Easa Al Gurg Charity Foundation, Union Coop, DP World, The Moon, and Shangri-La Hotel.”
She also commended the role of specialized volunteer consultants who have contributed their expertise in various fields to support the association.
The presence of people with Down syndrome was particularly inspiring at the Expo, where self-advocates toured the exhibition stands, spreading positivity and delivering a powerful message that they are capable, creative, and productive contributors to society.
