Emirates Down Syndrome Association organizes the first Emirates Robotics Championship for People with Down Syndrome

Emirates Down Syndrome Association organized the first Emirates Robotics Championship for People with Down Syndrome at its headquarters in Dubai, under the patronage of Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Son of the Crown Prince of the Emirate of Fujairah, with the participation of 44 students representing five centers and two schools.
In her remarks, Dr. Manal Jaroor, EDSA Chairperson, stated that this championship represents an important step in highlighting the abilities of our children and unlocking their potential.
Dr. Jaroor added, “We established the Robotics Club in 2018 after noticing our children’s passion for robotics following their integration into the Applied Technology High School’s practical training program in robotics. Since then, our champions have participated in GITEX 2018, the Ministry of Education competitions in 2019, the virtual competitions during the pandemic in 2020, and in the Accessabilities expo 2023.”
Dr. Jaroor emphasized that this championship represents a historic opportunity, opening doors for people with Down syndrome to explore the world of technology, which contributes to enhancing their motor and cognitive skills. She noted that using robotics in education is not merely a tool but a powerful means to develop problem-solving abilities and enhance creative thinking, enabling them to integrate more deeply into society.
Dr. Jaroor expressed her gratitude to Union Coop, the diamond sponsor of the association’s activities, represented by Dr. Suhail Al Bastaki, Chief Community Relations Officer at Union Coop, as well as to the members of the technical committee: Mr. Saad Khader, Dr. Hessa Al Tunaiji, and Dr. Osama Qassem.
For her part, Ms. Nawal Al Naser, EDSA Vice-chairperson, emphasized the crucial role of supporting of supporting people with Down syndrome and providing suitable environments that encourage creativity and innovation.
The championship was attended by representatives from various entities, including the Ministry of Community Development’s Associations of Public Interest Department, the People of Determination Administration and Licensing at the Community Development Authority, the Empowerment Council for People of Determination at Dubai Police, the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities, Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment, and several private sector institutions.
Participating in the championship were the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, Dubai Center for Care and Rehabilitation of People of Determination, Dibba Fujairah Center for Care and Rehabilitation of People of Determination, Al Noor Training Centre for People of Determination, Al Qaim School – grade Two for Boys, and Zayed Educational Complex – Al Muhaisnah.
