Emirates Down Syndrome Association organized the third virtual “Enarat” conference under the theme “Health and Happiness.”
The conference addressed several important topics presented by a distinguished group of experienced specialists in food and nutrition. The discussions focused on health and happiness for people with Down syndrome.
Dr. Sheiam Sulaeman delivered two key presentations, one on the nutritional challenges associated with Down syndrome and the other on the impact of food choices, eating behavior, and lifestyle patterns. Specialist Rand Al Disi addressed the issue of obesity and its link to non-communicable diseases affecting people with Down syndrome. Consultant Wafaa Ayesh provided insights into the latest advancements in nutritional therapy for people with Down syndrome, offering a forward-looking perspective.
The conference also featured the presentation of healthy recipes prepared by students from the Emirates Down Syndrome Hospitality Academy, a program designed to train and empower students in the fields of culinary arts and hospitality. The academy is the first of its kind in the UAE and operates in collaboration with the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management.
The event attracted over 255 participants from among parents, specialists, supporters, and advocates representing 27 nationalities across 18 countries, including GCC countries, other Arab nations, and several European countries.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Manal Jaroor, EDSA Chairperson, stated that one of the key objectives of the conference is to promote a healthy lifestyle for people with Down syndrome, supporting their physical and mental well-being and enhancing their ability to enjoy a healthier and more fulfilling life.
Dr. Jaroor highlighted that the risks of obesity are more complex and serious for people with Down syndrome due to genetic disorders, muscle weakness, limited mobility, hormonal changes, and altered eating patterns. Additionally, they are more vulnerable to health complications associated with obesity, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Ms. Nawal Al Nasser, EDSA Vice Chairperson, emphasized the importance of supporting families by addressing their needs, especially those related to health. She stressed the significance of health education, adopting healthy habits, and promoting physical activity to prevent disease, maintain mental and general health, and improve overall quality of life. Such efforts contribute to greater independence, overall well-being, and the full integration of people with Down syndrome into society.
Ms. Salma Kanan, EDSA CEO and moderator of the conference, expressed her satisfaction with the successful achievement of its goals. She stated:
“We always strive to select topics with great care, and the conference has yielded the desired results, evidenced by the active engagement of the attendees. Their questions and interest in the finer details, as well as the guidance and advice provided by the specialists, reflect the conference ‘s success.”
